State Auditor's Office

Goals

Update: Changed this goal and some of the subsidiary objectives (as indicated by (G) for goal and (O) for objective cited from the 2020 plan) to focus on creating a reliable and sustainable data and technology foundation. By providing reliable and sustainable "foundational" data and technology services, the CSI will empower CSI staff to evolve business processes and use technology to improve operations and better serve our customers.

Objectives

  • Maintain and enhance the IT infrastructure to support the operations of the Agency
Update: Create and sustain a CSI Data and Technology Plan and Roadmap: This is two separate items, a plan and a roadmap:
    1. CSI will annually produce a plan that outlines all software, hardware and services necessary to support the foundational operational data and technology needs of the CSI. The plan documents what we know we will be doing the coming year in a detailed manner and the benefit of the plan will be to help us know, manage and control our data and technology efforts and will enable us to make better informed investments and decisions around data and technology.
    2. Road-mapping is more about maintaining a continuous longer-term data and technology strategy that enables the CSI to be adaptable and changeable as business needs, drivers and technology evolve and change.
  • Streamline updates and procedures to accommodate more efficient practices.
G3: Secure Computing - Improve Data Security
G3 O1: Continue to implement NIST security controls that ensure the security, privacy, availability, and integrity of data and systems.

Update: Policies and Procedures: All processes and procedures related to data and technology operations are documented and followed. In addition to operating more efficiently, knowing and following proper procedures and policy will help the CSI protect and manage data better.
  • Investment in IT can never stop
    G3 O3: Employee Development

Update: "Right-size" the CSI IT Department: CSI will ensure the agency has the skills and capacity needed to support the CSI's data and technology needs now and into the future. CSI will move away from trying to have the all the necessary skills "in-house" and towards having them only when and where needed.

Update: Changed this goal and some of the subsidiary objectives to focus facilitating process automation and streamlining services. Once foundational needs are being met, CSI will identify candidate projects and areas of operations for process improvement and streamlining, or be able to execute on candidate projects and areas already identified.

Objectives

  • G2 O2: Provide balanced management of information and technology
G2 O3: Be flexible and responsive
G3 O4: Maintain and enhance the IT infrastructure to support the operations of the Agency

Update: Identify, prioritize and begin execution on candidate projects and areas of operations that can be streamlined or automated to improve services. Doing this will require the CSI to adopt and use project management and project portfolio skills and practices.

Update: Changed our third goal to focusing on transforming the CSI into a data-driven organization. Use and leverage data and artificial intelligence (AI). The CSI and the industries we regulate are awash in data that can be harnessed toinform decision-making and drive regulatory and operational priorities. As the foundational data and technology needs of CSI are being met and immediate and intermediate process andautomation improvements are made, opportunities to leverage data and AI will emerge or become apparent and the CSI will be in a better position to take advantage of those opportunities.

Objectives

  • G2 O1: Data driven decision making ensures and encourages information to be continually added and updated.
Update: Begin the transformation of the CSI into a "data-driven" organization through awareness, education and training and identifying what other states and regulating organizations are doing well and what best-practices exist and can be applied or used in Montana.
