Department of Military Affairs

Goals

Update: DMA continues to optimize and standardize our systems and deployments to increase capacity and maintain security standards in compliance with SITSD policies and standards, while reducing the workload on our IT staff wherever possible.

Objectives

  • Mobile environment:
Use infrastructure services to bring end user resources seamlessly for work from home environments.

Update: We have successfully rolled out VPN clients for all of our domain connected machines, including ones not connected to the State of Montana SummitNet network. This has greatly increased the capacity of our employees to do work and stay connected remotely both in the field and at home.
  • Utilize more cloud services:
Remove the need for hard services allowing for more connectivity and sharing.

Update: DMA employees have access to a wide range of online file sharing platforms with the ability to share documents both directly and using shared links, making the ability to work with our remote and federal partners easier.

Update: 100% of DMA employees participated and completed annual cyber security training campaigns during years 2021 and 2022.

Objectives

  • Protect:
Continue end user training through the use of tools and in-person reviews.

Update: DMA has offered the state KnowBe4 training to all employees in addition to any trainings offered by our federal partners. IT staff continue to host trainings for security and other needs as requested.
  • Reduce vulnerabilities:
Simplified end user software and machines through MDM services to protect end users and data.

Update: As of June 2022, all state-owned cellular devices, including phones, JetPacks/hotspots, and iPads are enrolled in MDM solutions. DMA IT staff are able to push out settings and applications to user's devices automatically as needed. Most workstation deployment tasks are automated and most users receive standardized security policies, software updates and installations automatically with no intervention on their part necessary.
